Unveiled: Meet the HD 620S
May 9, 2024 at 4:53 PM Post #106 of 300
That is very true about the HD 660S2, I'm quite surprised how prominent it is despite it's measurements. It's one of those headphones I find have more bass than the measurements indicates. I have others that have less bass than measurements indicate, and some are about where I expect based on measurements.

I found bass very hard to guage based on measurements alone, the S2 is notably more prominent in the bass than the measurements indicate to me. Whereas something like my T1 Gen 3 is less bassy than it's measurements indicate. I wasn't a fan of the HD 560S either, it had less bass and body than I expected, wasn't my cup of tea.
measurable quantity and perception are definitely on separate-but-perpendicular rails.

To circle back to leakage, @ericpalonen do you have specifications or subjective observations? As somehow recently foisted back into the office, I'm also on the hunt for a closed back that isolates sound well and doesn't leak at moderate volume (say 80-85 db).

Also, carrying case? Given the price point I'm not surprised one isn't included, but an affordable option with perfect fit (ideally without having to detach the cable, but that may be asking too much) would be appreciated!

If this were any other ordinary Thursday, I'd mount it to my KU 100 and give you a video demo, but I'm in the middle of a move so it's in storage. I believe we have isolation specifications for the wearer, but not the other way around. That said, I can do a down n' dirty practical demonstration for everyone with a little bit of time.

The HD620S were on display today at the High End Munich show, and I had a chance to listen to them.

For me, the standout aspect of these headphones is the remarkable clarity. There is a "cleanliness" to the sound that is often not there in the lower-priced closed back headphones.

Also, the staging and imaging were akin to the HD660S, and the bass response is pretty good in terms of impact and punch. Changing pads will further increase bass response from what I learned so there is room for further tweaking.

If I have to find one criticism it would be the treble response, which could be peaky with certain tracks. Again, I had a very short demo in a not-so-ideal condition, so take this impression with a bit of salt.

In terms of build and comfort: no complaints there. The earpads are plush and the headband has ample foam padding.

Overall, I think these are very interesting in terms of pricing and performance, and should be one on the list to audition for the fans of HD6XX series.

Ah how interesting! I stand corrected. Now I need to hear this thing for myself. I was not impressed with the 560 but love the S2, so I’m trying to approach this new model with an appropriate amount of caution.
Hope you get to try it soon like this head-fier 👇👇

Now I'm going to try my HD 598 pads on the HD 620S because why not?

Edit: don't bother

An interesting and overall very positive and informative review by Solderdude: https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/brands-s-se/hd620s/ -- despite his rig not being industry standard; taking it with a grain of salt, it's still somewhat interesting for relative comparisons.

He tested the HD 560S earpads and that resulted in a drastic drop in the bass as I expected for velour pads in a closed back that relies on a good seal. Thought he HD 560S dust guard seems interesting for those sensitive to treble, as it apparently reduces the lower-mid dip slightly and tames some resonances in the upper treble (and well, also extra protection against dust and hairs from reaching the driver and preventing annoying 'rattle' bass issues as a bonus).

Hoping to give these a try in June!

@ericpalonen
Very interesting release. Having owned the HD650, HD58X Jubilee and heard the HD598 briefly I'm intrigued to try it out.

Will you guys consider a cable with a boom mic of sorts? Based on the sound presentation, this could make for a very good gaming headphone. Or an "active" cable with a built-in mic like those with an included usb-c DAC to use both on PC and/or smartphone as extra accessory :)

Also, is the headband padding removable? In case one wants to use an aftermarket one with wider contact points.

I know it was at the request of the OP but seems silly to have closed the discussion thread in the headphones category and then put all discussion on this model in this sponsor corner of the forums? I mean it's fine I guess - just a bit inconsistent.

Indeed, swapping the stock pads for velour pads add zero acoustic benefit and drastically alter both bass response, focus, and soundstage.

We'll pass the boom mic feedback along. We already have an in-line mic option for the 500 series that works with the HD 620S. Headband padding is removeable, but is not a snap-on/snap-off like the earpads (adhesive backing)

Ok. Thanks Eric. Waiting for it to be available in EU to try it out. Connecting them to a Qudelix 5K should be a good alternative too with a 2.5mm to 2.5mm balanced cable.
Thanks. Those cables look a bit thin though. Don't know how reliable they are in the long run..

Qudelix 5K
I might have to pull the trigger on one of these. I need another thumbDAC like a submarine needs a balcony but this is Head-Fi so ...
